CiC Summer Workshop: How to Support Intercultural Readiness in Higher Education through Interactive Workshops

June 10, 2021
15:30-17:00

Live via Zoom

Description:

Intercultural competence is no longer a ‘nice to have’ but how exactly can we teach and assess interpersonal skills? Embracing cultural diversity at the campus can not only support students’ transition into the new environment but also enhance their overall international experience of the student life – both academic and social aspects of it - which, in turn, will equip them with the so much needed global transferable skill for their future career. During the interactive session, the participants will be given a chance to reflect upon the role of language centres in promoting and developing soft skills. The session leader will also give examples of how CLIC at University of Cambridge has been addressing the emerging need of interpersonal skill development through its recently developed ‘inter-communication’ provision including key activities of which some will be experienced first-hand by the participants of the workshop.

About the Speaker:

Kasia works as an intercultural facilitator at the University of Cambridge and at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. She is an active member of academic intercultural discussion groups, which enables her to engage with the most recent developments in the field. For a number of years, Kasia has been supporting individuals and organisations in their intercultural interactions through training and coaching and has been involved in projects at all management levels.

Running a Communication-Intensive Feedback Tutorial

October 5, 2020
17:30-18:30

Live via Zoom

In this final workshop, we’ll discuss how to prepare for feedback tutorials, what to do during an (online) tutorial, and what you can ask students to do after a tutorial. This workshop dovetails specific feedback methods for written, spoken, and visual/digital assignments with strategies for managing a group toward achieving communication assignment goals.

Pre-Workshop Task:

Participants will be asked to answer some questions online about a communication-assignment tutorial that is part of your course.

Preparing Students to Complete Communication Assessments II

September 28, 2020

17:30-18:30

Live via Zoom

In this workshop, we’ll apply feed-forward methods discussed in the first workshop to the actual assignments in your Common Core course. Depending on assignment type, participants will split into groups and work with colleagues from the Digital Literacy Lab, Writing Centre, or Speaking Studio. We’ll explore ways of using your tutorial time to support student achievement on assignments, and in cases where tutorial time is limited, we will discuss how to help your students use 1:1 Digital Literacy, Speaking Studio, and Writing Centre consultations to get support at different stages of the authoring process.

Pre-Workshop Task:

Participants are required to describe the main assignments in their course in detail through an online form, with attention to higher order elements that are crucial to task achievement.
